You're listening to the Radcast, a top 25 worldwide business podcast. If it's radical, we cover it.

00:13
Here's your host, Ryan Alford. What's up, guys? Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast. Radcast. I get excited here, Chris. It's our weekly marketing and business news. It's October 13th, 2023. Chris is coming to us from the vacay lounge and hot. Not so hot today. We'll chilly Miami. We'll chilly energy Vegas as well. What's up, Chris?

00:42
What's up, baby? How are you? Oh, living the dream. I'm hours away from a little country concert action. My boys, thousand horses, Warren's eaters, siters, however you want to call it. Warren's Warren is Warren. Pretty little poison. We're going to go get it on at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. So, yeah, I'm pumped for that. Be a good time. Yeah. Michael Hobbie, lead singer, good friend. But on the podcast going to go.

01:11
Chill with those guys, little backstage action, little tour bus action, all the behind the scenes stuff. Just living that rockstar lifestyle. Hey, what happens when someone's gotta do it? Someone's gotta do it. But excited for that, they've got a new song out. You gotta go give them a shout if you ever heard of it. Just do a thousand horses, look for them. Highway Sound, their latest hit. Things are good though. Just here in G Vegas rocking and rolling.

01:38
on your number one marketing and business podcast on Apple. We appreciate everyone. We've been maintaining that the last two, three weeks. We don't seem to be going where Chris, it seems the downloads are going up and the position is staying right at number one. So we appreciate it. So what happens when you give people what they need? The news told to you through a different lens. Laugh while you learn.

02:01
No bullshit, just news. Just raw marketing and business news. And look, we're gonna start with value today, baby. Here's the value. Domino's is giving away free pizza. They've launched their emergency pizza program. In order to get it, you sign up for the rewards app. I think you make one purchase that's fairly nominal and then you get a free medium to topping pizza anytime you need it.

02:30
your emergency pizza. So if you want a free pizza, go sign up with Domino's. It comes to us from today.com. Are you a Domino's fan? I was about to say, I think I might be feeling an emergency now. We're going to hit that button. I can go for a little two topping Domino's. I am a Domino's guy. I have been really ever since college. They had a good deal for when I was in a student. That cheesy bread, bro. Yeah.

02:59
Tasty. Yeah. And I remember the campaign, we even talked about it, it's been a couple years. It came brought back, Avoid the Noid. That was like their TV campaign back in like the early, like 90s, late 80s, early 90s. It was like this character that tried to blow up all their delivery drivers. I think I remember this now. Yes, it was a very fun campaign back in the day, especially if you can catch the old, how bad, I don't know, some of the characters were in that day and age.

03:28
The Little Caesars. Yeah, the little Noid was strange at best, but I do remember the campaign. But Domino's is always staying out there. They're changing, they're always throwing stuff at you. They do the delivery wherever you want. I feel like they've done pretty well with bringing the pizza delivery game to the modern times. They always stay, I wouldn't say there's anything they do that I'm blown away by, but they're always there in a positive light. Right.

03:58
Hungry Howie's, I feel like for a few years, was like became like the low tier pizza, right? Domino's has always been my go-to. Papa John's, Domino's. Yep, there they are. You never know when you're gonna need a pizza. So if you need a free meat and pizza, we started off with the value and look, let's make this practical application here. Okay, they want people, more people signing up for the app. If you have the app, you get alerts, you order more pizza, you order more stuff.

04:28
Everybody wants you to be on their app and they can give away a free pizza. That pizza cost them two bucks probably, two or three bucks. It's worth it with the purchase you have to make and getting someone on the app because look, the acquisition cost in today's world, they're gonna spend more than that on ads anyway. A couple dollars cost to get you using the app and your lifetime value going up is the play here. And so if you've got an app,

04:58
Sometimes you gotta give away shit to get people to get on it because there's friction involved. You gotta download it You're like, alright, am I really gonna use this? But you know what if I get a free pizza, I'm probably gonna download it and I'll tell you what if I'm getting the free pizza I'm adding on the the mold lava take dessert Cheesy sticks and probably a two liter of Pepsi. Oh, you know what? They're gonna make up for that two bucks easy

05:23
That media pizza just cost you $34. Yeah, literally. I was gonna say $35. Yeah. Come on guys, it's free. Yes, it's free. The free pizza with the other shit we know you're gonna buy. And we're gonna have our app and they're gonna send you constant notifications at the kickoff of every game. Every possible time where you maybe think about ordering a pizza, you're gonna get that notification. Allow notifications, allow.

05:51
Every Friday, Chris, save $5 if you order pizza right now. Sold, give me that. You're done, you're in. Done for it, they've got you hooked, hook, line and sinker. Yep. We started with the plus, now we'll start with the negative. It's not negative, this probably should have happened a long time ago, but the potential that's, if you like Skittles, you might be a little scared because they're banning.

06:16
The additives that are in skittles and many other things. Now you got to, they got a few years to respond. I think it's 2027. So relax. You can still go get your skittles today, but taste the rainbow. Yeah. Taste the rainbow. You don't want to stock up if you like that flavor though, because once it's gone, if you like that artificial rainbow flavor, you get that, get that food coloring. Yes. It may be causing bigger issues and in your health.

06:43
But it may be carcinogenic. Yeah. But if you love the flavor, load up on those reds kiddos. Taste the rainbow. And the chemicals and the cancer. There are California's Gavin Newsom signed it into law and banning food products containing four specific additives. They affect numerous products and it's California's the first state to enact the ban. So that's probably gonna keep coming in and probably already should have already

07:12
That shit's bad for you, but I do like Skittles. So I will munch on some Skittles. I love Skittles, but I did have to take a step back from them after learning about these set ingredients, honestly. So you're already on the, off the bandwagon or off the bandwagon, depending on the spot. I'm not a fid. You don't get me wrong. I looked at a bag of them last night in the corner store and there still is a second debate, but then I choose me.

07:42
as I buy a Coca-Cola. Yeah, exactly. Wash it down with a Coke. I'll pick my battles. Yeah, and I wonder, I'm of the mind that, I bet you they sold more Skittles yesterday, or the day, whenever this article came out. Oh, 100%. Like, it was probably good for business in the short term, and maybe bad long term, but I guarantee you, just the awareness, is like, look, people get triggered by awareness, top line awareness, this is the way marketing works. Everybody says advertising doesn't work on them. That's because they don't know.

08:11
They don't know the tricks we deploy. And in this case, top line awareness went up for the brand, whether it was good, bad or different. And I wouldn't be surprised if they sold more this week than they have, because it just, you're more aware so you're in line at the grocery store.

08:30
and you look at all the candy that's there and you ignore them, but that Skittles awareness is top of mind and you look at it and you grab it, especially if you're Skittles fan anyway. You're going, ah, I have one more bag. I haven't grown a second head yet. So what's one more bag gonna do for me? Yep, 100%. As Halloween trick or treaters bags are about to be filled with Skittles by the end of the month. Exactly. It might impact, it could impact that negative.

08:58
Like I could see short term, like the awareness jump, jump it up. People go, Oh, I'm going to have a bag right now. And then, but like the moms buying the hell away, no candy, no Johnny off the shelves for you. None for you. Stick to the other candy. Yep. In other news, and I'll admit we're recording. We do record this show a little bit for it air. Someone may have won by the time, but pre recording.

09:25
1.8 billion drawing for the Powerball jackpot. We're almost at two bills, two billion. And so I said this on the podcast a lot, so you've probably if you're a regular listener and we love you for that, you've probably heard me say this before. It's just it's so funny to me how people start rushing out. I'm like, because 300 million wasn't enough for you.

09:47
They don't get motivated when it was a $300 million jackpot. I'm not getting that. But it's 1.8 billion, I'm in. It's only 300 mil, save the dollar, save the money. Yeah, I'm not playing. It's not worth it. But if it gets a 1.8 bill, everybody's in. So I'm gonna stop and get it.

10:08
take it on the way home. I may need to do that. I think I'm gonna do the same. Actually, I don't know. I think I've played the Powerball one time, accidentally. Same, I don't ever play those games. The only time I buy, I bought scratch cards and give them to people in their birthday card. Which I think is cool. I've done that for friends. Like $100 scratch cards. Cause look, it probably...

10:38
win a few bucks, maybe not, but it's the game. And then what if they win like 10 grand? You never know. And I'd be like, give me half that. Yep, yep. But what are the chances of you sharing that with me since I bought it for you? Yeah, it's like, bro, that would never would have happened if it wasn't for me. So take it, I should get half. I do that with my kids sometimes, we're driving like on a road trip and it starts getting like a little long in the tooth. Everybody's looking at each other going, it's been a long trip.

11:08
I will pull the old crash cards out. That buys us like 30, 40 minutes. If I buy like 20 of them. My dad used to do that trick for sure. Everybody started like starting to beat on one another. So we'll bring them out. So you're gonna see a lot of this in the news you haven't. You're gonna be over $2 billion if someone doesn't win or didn't win by the time this airs. In other news, Popeyes has surpassed KFC as the second largest chicken chain.

11:37
in the US. Wow. You remember that big buzz on the Popeyes chicken sandwich? Oh, yeah, like then Migos promoting it. I was in Houston at the time and it was like the talk of the town. Yes. And then it became like chicken sandwich wars with everyone. I remember going and buying one of the Popeyes regular chicken, one of the spicy Popeyes chicken. Yep.

12:04
It was like a field trip. It was good. I mean honestly, they're good. It was like, I thought it was gonna be all talk, but then I had one, I'm like, it's pretty damn good. It's good, for sure. And let's be honest, if you can't call yourself Kentucky Fried Chicken, you're gonna go to third place. You KFC acronym, this is Kentucky Fried Chicken, I bet you they'd still be in second. Lean in. KFC. KFC is a culture. It's an easy acronym, but I like.

12:32
Kentucky fried chicken, baby. Come on. The Colonel. Yeah. They put it this way. Popeye's marketing team has done a much better job the last few years in KFC. Ever since they lost the Colonel. Yeah. They've lost their way. They try to do the whole, they've tried to have like what? 17 different Colonel's. Then they did a spoof on the whole thing, I think with different ones, but

12:59
It's not good. The marketing for KFC. Not my favorite. I do I do think I love what Popeye's did for the whole chicken sandwich category. I'm a chicken sandwich guy. It elevated everybody's game. Chick-fil-A was always like right there, but then everybody else has came along. So now when my kids want to eat fast food and I'm not I don't really want to eat fast food. Someone's always got a good chicken sandwich now. So I appreciate them and they deserve number two just for that alone.

13:29
They do, Chick-fil-A is number one, by the way. And their success has been attributed to menu efficiency and customer service. No shit. It's my pleasure to tell you that data. Literally, do Chick-fil-A applause. Yeah. They crush it. They've done it and they've been consistent with it for a long time. Yeah, somehow they made it also seem and fool all the moms that it's healthy.

13:57
I saw a video about that yesterday. Some guys filming the drive up line and he's, this is trash. However, if I got to go fast food, I'm going Chick-fil-A all day. Yeah. I got some, a lot of old clients and friends that actually work for Chick-fil-A now. Joe Saraceno, VP of marketing there. Shout out Joe. I know you're listening. He does a good job for them and all their employees. And it's my pleasure because it's always theirs. The,

14:26
This is cool. Cameron, I maybe pulled this one out. I don't know. Cameron Rain, who knows? Hypebeast.com. Porsche hits the waves with latest collaborations. Porsche's partnered with, I'm not gonna, a really fancy boat company for the electric 850 Phantom Air Sports boat, featuring drive technology from the upcoming all electric Porsche, Macan, and with Duotone for limited edition.

14:55
kiteboarding kit inspired by the pink pig Porsche. Both collaborations highlight Porsche's expansion into nautical and kiteboarding realms. Even saying this curve ball kiteboarding was not totally expected. The nautical was you. We were just talking about what the Lambo, the Lamborghini. Yeah. Yeah. The thing looks pretty sick by the way. It just looks mean. It would just go.

15:21
The Lambo? Yeah, it looks like it could go 5,000 miles per hour and jump over a continent. That's why I'm wondering what this bad boy looks like. Yeah, I didn't see the pictures, but I'm sure they're out there. It's electric 850 Phantom Air Sports boat. That's a lot of stuff there. I'm looking at a picture I think right now. It looks way less cool than the Lamborghini boat. Yeah. Not surprising. It's a good looking boat, but.

15:51
completely different, also electric. I don't know how I feel about that. I will say this, for a brand play, I know there's a lot of, and I haven't owned multiple boats, I guess I'm a boat enthusiast, but I'm probably a boat brand enthusiast. I think the boat market would be ripe as hell for a takeover from brands with these kind of cachet names.

16:16
Yeah, Lambo could create this, but $4 billion boat, whatever the hell it was. Very expensive. But if they actually brought to market a mass market boat with one of the Porsche Lamborghini, BMW, and all these people are like, I think they could crush it if they could put the numbers together. Yeah, I agree. The brand cache, I think would translate over maybe some of the, I think it'd bring a whole new market.

16:45
to boating even. I agree with you 100%. Cause I just don't think, if you aren't a boater, you don't know these names. Like I got into boating in the last five or six years. Now I know some names. So I hear them and yeah, they have cache and there's luxury and then there's performance and all that stuff. But to bring over, that's a natural kind of transition for one of these brands. So I get why they're doing it as a collab. I think you could get.

17:13
some people that are maybe typically more like car guys. If I was a 911 guy and I knew Porsche was starting to make a boat, I would probably be like, oh, I'm interested, let me read about this. And I definitely think you could sway some more.

17:31
Cause you're right. It's a whole different category. Like the boating world, if they can merge those a little easier for people. Yeah. And just the brand carryover, I think. And I think the biggest thing is just the cost of setting up manufacturing. And that's why it makes sense that they collab. But if I was just like a somewhat, I made really nice boats, but my name wasn't quite out there yet. Then tag team with, on a more medium to mass market boat. Yeah.

18:00
Tell me you wouldn't, I would be all over a Rolls Royce pontoon. Dude. I'm talking about that would be in class. Yeah, dude. I'd be all over that. I'd be like, okay, tune it up in the old, the Phantom tune, the ghost tune. I love that. See? Yeah. Call me Rolls Royce. We can get on this. I know some people at some pontoon companies.

18:28
Right. There you have it. I think it gets it makes sense from a collaboration standpoint. And I think it could make bigger sense. Maybe you'll see more of these things as we go along. In other news, Kevin James joins in on viral King of Queens meme, an old promo picture for the hit show King of Queens. We start Kevin James smirking to the camera with his hands in his pockets has completely taken over their net with memes. And now the comedian has joined in on the fun.

18:57
This came to us from today.com. Did you ever watch, you know, Kevin James is obviously. I know he is. I've never watched the show. I can't say, I know the show. I think I've watched one episode ever. It was very popular CBS show, but, and I am familiar with the meme, but I was not a huge King of Queens fan, but supposedly.

19:25
according to this news article. And we don't talk about anything that's not real or factual unless the source made it up. This is major news. And bigger news, I will just say this, I'm gonna stay out of the whole war talk, but you can't avoid it right now with what's happening. And if you're listening going, how are you not bringing this up? We're business and marketing news. And yes, it's impactful. Yes.

19:55
A lot of people are being impacted at a major serious level. So I'm mentioning it by saying we're aware of it, but I'm not informed enough nor have the breaking news on every life and political and worldwide event that's going on. So there you have it. Have acknowledged it. Instagram threads, perhaps a trending topics feature.

20:24
in their battle with X that I'm just not sure who cares about it, but Instagram threads app is preparing to launch a trending topics feature in an effort to better compete with its rival X. Formally Twitter. Every article now still always says formally Twitter. I don't know when that's gonna go away. It's gonna say that for four years from now. It's gonna say it's rival X. Yes. AKA Twitter. Forever. But.

20:53
Does anyone still using threads? Dude, I log on maybe once a month. Like I feel like they're running ads. They're literally running ads on Instagram to get you to use them. To get you to click to go over threads. Which tells me you're not doing very well. I'd love to see, I saw where like the use amount like dropped off the cliff after that first 30.

21:22
40 days or whatever it was. But I have a feeling it's dropped even further. So. Yeah, definitely. And, but, since we do want to report on all the news and all the platforms, they do have a trending topics portion about to get. It's terrible for discovery right now. That's my problem with it. I can go in there and I see the people that follow. I see their threads. It's usually regurgitated from what's on Instagram.

21:48
I think Storm's having his lunch there. We're waiting to see if it picked up. His goofy ass, at least I see breakfast right in the middle of the fucking recording. We love it. We're going to get him on camera next time. I might as well just set up his food bowl right here. Just have like, so we know what it is. Bring it on listing.

22:10
One is Chris's dog in Miami and he likes to eat only when we're recording We're about we're a show of the people so we're not even gonna edit this out We want you to know that this is real and storms got to eat Exactly, maybe storm looks like might just become the star of the radcast was lucky action here He's at the bottom of that bowl. It's pretty good. Good. I think it's a good time to bring up our latest sponsor

22:38
If you can see my table here, depending on where you are, I'll bring some of their products in. Caldera Labs. I'm gonna, and it's singular. I like to add the S, I don't know why.
