00:23
Here's your host, Ryan Alford. Hey guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast. Friday, December 16th, 2022. Our weekly marketing and advertising news of the week. Christina Yasi, what's up? Here in the flesh. I know we can do the show anywhere. You know, anywhere I'm I'm.
00:48
multitasking on the road, you're in the studio. I'm in your spot in the studio too. Different share, same spot. So watch it. We've got all, you know, rearranging your furniture going. Oh yeah. It's working. How's everyone today? Doing well. Doing great. It's a chilly rainy day here in G Vegas. It's been raining for a while now. The river is very high. You're missing that. It's almost flooded.
01:18
I've been there many a time before we clean that thing out. It did flood. You guys are missing the real excitement. It's been a good week. We've been transitioning the office over to social. We talked about that last week. Fully launched. So you're in Greenville. Come check us out. Get your lounge on. Get that membership. Come watch our...
01:45
Come celebrate our national championship watch party in January. Details to come. Is that the 9th? It is, January 9th. January 9th. And you can come even if you're not a member. Just a small cover fee. Exactly. There you go. Open for everybody. So have you gotten all your Christmas shopping done? Oh, you know, I have, I have like one, I got to buy the cold last thing and- Nine days, you got nine days to do it.
02:14
Yeah, I got one or two little things, but Nicole kind of takes the brunt of most of that. Sure. And she's kind of coming down to the fumes of both energy and time. Right, top of the note. Well, TechCrunch has made it super easy and they released their 2022 gift guide, which is great. And they've broken it down into coffee, STEM toys, extremely online books, fitness tech.
02:44
Super easy and shoppable. So that's what I'll be using because I've bought two presents so far and I have nine days. Nice. What's the best thing on the list? What's the most exciting thing? Is there anything worth noting? Let me go to a category. I mean, a Mac Studio for your work from home office. Who wouldn't want that? Yeah, that sounds good. You know, that was the coolest thing in the home office section. What does that set you back?
03:13
Oh, you know, just a small student loan. The MacBook Air is a better option, but you use that Apple credit card, you know, 0% interest. Finance that shit. That's my motto. These are some pricey gifts here. These are gifts for people who really like. Let's see. We'll go to the coffee section. This will be cheaper shortly. Start with the beans. Oh, like a little bean subscription for the coffee lover in your family.
03:43
You can get a little portable coffee press, which is only like $40. Yeah, that sounds good. It could go with, we had what our holiday gift exchange yesterday, maybe Nick needs to get that to go with his Dutch oven. There you go, little mini Dutch oven. Yeah, that's what I need. I got my little solar charger, which could be on this list.
04:10
I about stole that. And I'm just like, I don't know. I almost stole my gift, too. I totally hear that. I was just going to say, TikTok released their food trends of 2020 into the year. We're wrapping up all these big lists. Yes. Of course, it kicks off with the Negroni Spagliato with Prosecco. You've seen the whole ghost. That is bougie.
04:38
Have you had a Negroni Spagliato with Prosecco? Yeah. Delicious. I love a good Negroni. They are good. They're good. And that green salad is on, did you see like all the green salad that went viral? It's just like a bunch of vegetables and you eat it with chips. Yep. That's on the top of the list. I'm pretty, at this time of year, I'm pretty vegetable deprived. I've got to like get by. I'm not a New Year's eat, like resolution kind of guy. Yeah. I try to like keep it all in balance, but.
05:07
I need some more vegetables in my life. I know this. Sure. At least you're self-aware enough. You know? Self-aware. You wanna share some Radcast news from the road? Yeah, of course. Everybody, I hope you enjoyed Tuesday's episode with John Durante, also a piano extraordinaire. What a great last name. Yeah, and he's like totally the New York guy too. He's like...
05:33
Total New York guy, total unassuming, but had a great story. Uh, I think he's super relatable. So if you haven't listened to that episode, go check it out on all your favorite channels or wherever you're listening to this, just hit back one and you'll get right to it. So, uh, go check that out. We'll be continuing.
05:55
And finalizing here in the next few weeks, I think billions of recordings. So continue to follow along. A lot of entrepreneurial journeys will be lots of cool episodes coming up. Yeah. Which is why you need to subscribe. Don't just be a one time listener. Like and subscribe, comment. Yeah. Follow all the things. And in that vein, get yourself some swag. I don't know if you can. My video is showing, but.
06:23
I'm in the studio surrounded by all of the branded bills. And unfortunately, with only nine days till Christmas, you probably won't get it in time, but who doesn't love gifts in January? Why wouldn't you want to kick off the new year with the belated Christmas gift? Celebrate the season year round and you can get 20 percent off with our Radcast 20 coupon code to go to Brandon Bill's back. Check them out. And, you know, when you take that stuff that you didn't really want back.
06:51
You can go get you, you know, a collab. There you go. Yeah, buy it for yourself. Also, Valentine's Day is coming up, so always an option. Always.
07:01
Options we any good social holidays. We do we have ugly sweater day, which I'm kind of celebrating I don't think it's ugly, but it certainly is like a little tacky with my little champagne. So I'm prepared It's also national chocolate covered anything day which can go in so many directions But we'll just leave it at that
07:21
It's so funny chocolate covers anything. Okay. Right, right. Like a little bit of an eye twitch. It's fine. Love that. Celebrate in your own way. And it's also underdog day. Who doesn't love pulling for the underdog? I know. Is it like underdog? I think it's like I'm having deja vu. I think we've done enough social holiday years now. I'm starting to like repeat them, right?
07:44
Is it underdogged the show or is it just an underdog in general? Oh, no, I thought it was underdog in general underdog day to Google. It's no, it's just every third Friday in December. And it is it's the little guy, not just underdog the cartoon. It's such a.
08:03
strange time for that, but you know, who doesn't want to root for the underdog? Truly. National Rudy day or whatever. There you go. Oh, I love that movie. My God. Tomorrow kind of keeping our buddy, the elf theme that is a through line for this season tomorrow, December 17th is national maple syrup day. So there you go for your pancakes. Get that.
08:27
Saturday I used I used to not think that there was a difference between regular syrup and like maple syrup rookie mistake or it wasn't worth the difference that's something you learn when you're growing up like there's a big difference and it tastes a lot good maple syrup is worth every dime um and the 17th is also national right brothers day the lovely inventors of the airplane so happy for them love that Hanukkah kicks off
08:54
which is exciting for all of our Jewish listeners. Chanukah on December 18th. My mom has like a big affinity for Jewish culture. So we have like menorahs in the house and we will play dreidel on Christmas Eve.
09:10
which is, you know, fun, but she just has a big affinity for Jewish culture. And when I get like just the right amount of tipsy, my Italian really comes out and people often mistake it for Jewish and the amount of times that I have been asked if I'm Jewish is concerning and also quite a compliment. I get very excited whenever anyone says, are you Jewish? I'm like, this is the best day of my life.
09:35
I forgot to get you really tipsy so we can see you take your Italian out. Listen, it'll happen. It happens at my comedy shows. It's full Mrs. Maisel. Full Mrs. Maisel. When I hear of Hanukkah, I think of that Adam Sandler song. Happy Hanukkah. Oh yeah. It's so good. And then December 19th is National Oatmeal Muffin Day.
10:00
Hyper specific as all of these holidays are. And the 20th, we can celebrate National Sangria Day, which I certainly will be doing. Love me some sangria. I like a good sangria. I feel like if you like wine, you gotta like sangria. Yeah, kinda have that too. And that's our little social media holidays. I know, we're kinda coming up to the big daddy here soon. I know, I'm so excited. Next week, we'll feature it. We've got some social media news.
10:28
in the throws of Elon Musk's Twitter takeover, which we have some Elon Musk news, but Instagram conveniently has now released a notes feature in their app. Like when you go to your messages, you can post status updates and essentially tweets. And I've had several friends say that this is all they need to leave Twitter. So I'm interested to see how that's gonna move forward. And they also have introduced candid stories to compete with Be Real.
10:55
So it'll be very interesting to see how this all shakes out just with what's happening with social media in general. I think it's fascinating and I've read up and I see, I haven't gotten the obvious is on about like two weeks a week, maybe getting on beta testers. I haven't like dabbled in it yet to like give it like a full Review.
11:21
pull on review or whatever, but it is interesting how they're kind of going for the jugular a bit like with Twitter, you know, having issues. So it's like, maybe we could backdoor our way into bringing those users over to a little who are a lot where a lot of them are. I don't know yet who's the scroll news. It's always hard to tell on Twitter. But they're always trolling anyway. But
11:51
But pun intended, but it will be interesting. It is interesting. I wonder what's the tipping point for Instagram being too bloated? I know, I know. And when they're like, you know, between Reels and now they've got notes and now you've got the candid options. And you, I mean, they really, what am I trying to say? When they released stories.
12:16
Right? That was the biggest, like to me that was like, oh, and why do we care about Snapchat anymore? Like that was, that was really when I was like, I don't want another app on my phone. So that was when I deleted Snapchat. So it was just interesting the things that stick and the things that like what, when it will become too bloated. Cause even though I don't want a million social media apps, I don't just want one either. That's right. But then Elon Musk, our next little article is,
12:43
It's not confirmed yet, but he's talking about increasing the tweet character limit from 280 to 4000, which to me, I mean, my thoughts on Elon Musk aside, I like Twitter because it's a short blurb. You know, I like I don't I don't mind the threads. I don't want to be on Twitter if I'm going to have to read for like a blog post, you know, just. I'd say it's suddenly a blog. Yeah. You know, start your own blog. I don't.
13:08
That's that I hope that that doesn't happen because nothing's been confirmed yet. But between like, if Instagram is gonna drop notes and then Elon Musk pushes a 4,000 character limit, that to me feels like maybe not the final nail in the coffin but like we're starting to hammer that coffin lid down. I just don't know. Elon's smarter than me. I say he's smarter than a lot of people. He's done some wacky stuff lately but.
13:38
He's still an intelligent person. So I don't, but I don't know at the surface level or get the 4000 character thing. But I would even, I would understand if he just, if you wanted to make them a little longer, okay, a little longer there, Mike, but 4000. Yeah. That's a lot. You're just completely kind of changing the angle of the platform it seems, but I don't know. Well, and it makes me think.
14:08
I deserve judgment, right? But like with Facebook, when whenever I see a status that says see more, I scroll right past it. Like I don't wanna read more about, you know, your family's dinner. But again, that's just me. For our marketing news this week, Pepsi's back. Last week we had PILK, and this week Pepsi's launching a limited time Nutmeg Cola. It's inspired by the game of soccer, which I don't personally get that connection, but good for Pepsi.
14:34
and the drink will be available in an ultra-limited product run with release details to be announced soon. I would dabble with this. I'm not a nutmeg person. Okay. Understood. I'm not a Pepsi person. I like PILK better. And I will say this. It was easily like top three things I got DM'd about of the year. PILK? That PILK highlight clip we posted.
15:03
Everybody like going either how disgusted they were or how funny they thought it was. It was, it caused quite the stir. Viral. Stir. Literally. You gotta stir it. Pilk. Yeah. I don't know if it's the Lindsay Lohan or the Pilk, but. Probably both. I mean, it's a smart, smart collab. Yeah.
15:25
But Nutmeg, ee, I'd be a no for me dog. Read my lips. I would try it. I wouldn't go out of my way to find it, but if it was presented to me, I would try it. But speaking of unlikely pairings, Blackpink, which is a K-pop group, they are teaming up with Oreo for black and pink cookies, which makes sense. Just kind of their name, Oreos.
15:49
Oreo has been all over the map with their stuff. Right. It seemed like for how many every year? I don't know. They've been around 50, 60, 70 years. Something like that. Long time. But for 40 of them, they've never veered off of a basic Oreo or a double stuff. Double stuff was as far as they got. But the last, I don't know, 10 years, has it? They now just have completely thrown out the book. They'll go peanut butter. They go.
16:18
carrot cake, lemon, and to, not to be a know-it-all, but I just Googled it and Oreo originated in 1912. Whoa. Right? 110 years old. I was way off. Just a little, just by like double, but it's fine. Yeah. I think they're owned by Nabisco now, but yeah. Who knows? But anyway, again, I would try this. I would try pink Oreo.
16:46
Yeah, I can get down with that. I like them go branding and stuff like that. Yeah. I think, you know, I'd love to know, like total sales. Obviously, there's more people in the world. There's probably more Oreo happening. Well, and this is available exclusively in Asia. Yeah, but like adding all of these branded things and all the different flavors, and they, I'm sure the answer is yes, so they probably would have stopped, but.
17:15
have they added more sales or are they just cannibalizing sales of regular? Sure. So were you going to buy an Oreo anyway? But now you've got multiple choices. So you just are deciding to do a choice or have they pulled people from other cookie decisions into their.
17:39
And anyway, I'd be fascinating to know that. Well, my thought would be, even though you didn't ask, you have like cookies and cream, which is the generic, like if you can't get the copyright or get the actual Oreo. So my thought would be if you have that option, right, of just a generic sandwich cookie versus all of Oreo's ridiculous flavors. I mean, I would think that for as silly as it is, it's been a very smart move for them because any brand can come out. Like, I don't think that they can copyright.
18:05
or trademark that's like a chocolate vanilla chocolate sandwich cookie. So who knows? Not me. And they don't taste as good. The generic, the old Bobo generic Oreo never came. Like some things come pretty close enough that I'll like, OK, I'll deal. The off brand.
18:24
The off brand, not the off brand Oreo. No, not worth it. Never. Agreed. Keeping with our food theme, because Nick and I are starving and need to eat. Doritos is launching a Name That Triangle social media contest, hashtag Name That Triangle. The participants can submit photos of their triangle inspired haircuts for the chance to win tickets to the Super Bowl. The challenge is inspired by Buffalo Bill's linebacker, Von Miller, who recently began sporting a triangle haircut.
18:54
Gotta love the NFL. Only they would do this. They've done. Doritos have done this playing off the triangle a few times, a little different. But you know, Bob Miller is kind of crazy. I mean, he's actually out for the season for his knee. But I think it doesn't keep him from having that Doritos haircut. And inspiring others. You need to get a, I hope he's got a sponsorship deal out of this. It's nothing else.
19:23
I like some Doritos too now. God same. You give me some Cool Ranch. That's I was gonna say, I'm a Cool Ranch girl. Damn right. I heard today about dipping Doritos in sour cream, which like I would eat sour cream with a spoon. So that sounds like best snack ever. You know, you are, oh my God. That is so good.
19:51
I'm gonna have to try it. You know, the purple bag of Doritos, pretty good too. Yeah. The kind of sweet, hot one. Kind of spicy, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, kind of like me. Just spicy and sweet. We gotta get you a Doritos collab. And that would be it. I can give mine that.
20:11
So our last last article of this episode got a tight 25 minute episode here is with about Meghan Trainor who's also viral on Tiktok right now with her made you look song but she is teaming up with elf cosmetics and the weather channel. What a what a collaboration there. Meghan Trainor is the new face of elf cosmetics and the weather channels collaboration. She channeled but us.
20:34
her favorite weatherman Al Roker for the campaign and wore a selection of sparkly iridescent looks with equally shiny makeup. Trainer says it was one of the best work days that anyone, that she's ever had and everyone was laughing on set. So this is kind of a fun, yeah. Fun intended. Right. The weather.
20:53
Hey, made you look too. Is that her newest song? Yes, it is. Hey. Yes, it is. Got a lot of integrations here. Yeah. And with women, people have always wanted to know what makeup weather channel people wear because they're up so early. They always look so perfect. I mean, this was, I remember being little and my mom was like, you always want to know what anchor women are wearing because they always look perfect at 4 a.m. So again, smart little collab.
21:18
It's called layered makeup, I think. The camera kind of hides how thick the makeup is on it in some way. That's also very true. High coverage. Is that what that's called? Yes.
21:35
Yeah. Yes, it is. Yeah. And guy talk, you say, I, you know, I'll pick your coverage. That's all different. You know, yes, I'll take my coverage for sure. I got you. I'm tracking. That's all we got today. Anything? No, I mean, it's good. You know, we're keeping it light here as we roll into the end of the year. We still like black people with.
22:03
Anything crazy. I think we're going to do a trends edition. Sometimes I've done these like November, December, and I think this year I've just decided we have so much content to get out and make billions to kind of. Get into the year, like, maybe the 1st or 2nd week in January. Everybody listening for like.
22:28
people don't market trends and stuff like that. Yeah. We're just sticking to the lighter themes here as we close out the new year. Tis the season. On our news editions. Love it. Well, yeah, good stuff. Thanks for joining us this week. Now get your Christmas shopping done. Don't be like me. Yeah, we appreciate it.
