00:31
information honestly in this episode so I'm excited for us to uh for a lot of tidbits in the news and the marketing news this is our late our weekly Friday marketing news update we try to capture you know the the headlines and the major brands and the you know tidbits here and there that we think are interesting based on what's happening in the
00:54
marketing, advertising, digital space, the land with which we roam daily. Yeah, exactly, exactly. So yeah, it's been a good week though. We've had a good release on Tuesday. I hope you've checked out the Austin Hope episode, good tidbits there. Austin talking about the latest scores for their wine, which is number seven in the world on wine enthusiasts. Right.
01:19
Also just some really good insights, I think, about how they've been doing business in COVID and getting closer to their customers and doing things. So really meaty episode and I really enjoyed that. Getting some good feedback. So yeah, no, it's been good. And you were also in another podcast this week. And that episode, you know, we'll try to share it on our channels too. But that's coming out in a couple of weeks. So that, but that's exciting that, you know, that was happening this week too. How's the rest of your week been? It's been good.
01:49
We've been busy at work. I mean, you know, we're always busy, I guess. So I think that's what people naturally say. But like, we do mean it around here at the Radcast. When we're busy, we are busy. That is very true. There's always something going on. We've got a few new clients in the door and working on that and new opportunities. And so it's good. It's just kind of one thing after the next.
02:19
You know, my wife had a follow-up surgery this week and she's good, but like, dealing with family stuff and the boys, we are two and one in our basketball league. We had a first loss last, by a point last week. Couple of our players were out though, so we, we were a little shorthanded, but.
02:41
you know, boys basketball, fourth grade. Yeah, exactly. I think I take it way more serious than they do. I feel like that's standard though. I feel like that's normal anymore. You know, it's not about who wins or loses, as long as you don't lose.
02:55
Right. And as long as it's not you, that's okay. I'm out there like yelling at the refs last weekend. I'm like, what am I doing? It's just like, you know, not in a bad way. I wasn't that dad or anything. I'm the coach, but I was definitely starting to get like, wait, you know, questioning calls. And I'm like, all right, just relax. Right, like come on here, yeah. No, I get that, I get that. I feel like we have a lot of just things that happened this week that is definitely just worth mentioning. As far as just,
03:24
kind of other things that are going on obviously Monday this week we started out with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and that brought in actually a couple points of our news topic today and one of that is the Atlanta Hawks had a jersey specially made honoring MLK and actually the Pope like the Pope figure yeah the Pope like blessed it and I just think that's so cool that they you know were able to incorporate that.
03:54
you know, what they needed it to do. And anyway, it's super cool. And that's just one thing that's happening. Did you see that? Did you see the news about that? I didn't until you brought it up. I checked it out, it was pretty cool. Yeah, no, it was super cool. It's been a weird week from the intermixing of, you have Martin Luther King Day on Monday. You have, you know, a African American, you know,
04:24
vice president coming into office, you have the strangeness that's been the political climate that we've had. It's been just an odd mixture of news, you know? Like. And emotion. And emotional. It's like, I just, it's felt, the news has felt emotional. I think everybody's a little off, you know, from like just the, like catching their breath. All right, you know, we have a different president, no matter how you felt about it. They're in office. We've had, you know, these.
04:52
you know, monumental days, you know, that, and then it's like.
04:57
you still have COVID kind of over like so. So it's just been, it's just, I don't even wanna call it negative. It's just been a weird climate of a week with all of those things kind of coming together. Absolutely. But I did like that once I saw the hawks thing, it was cool. It was nice. Oh, super cool. And I loved the integration and it was cool, especially being right down the road in Atlanta. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you see or listen to the Amanda Gorman's poem that she did at the inauguration? Cause it was beautiful. I did not.
05:27
It was a beautiful poem and I was just so much. The inauguration was yesterday or two days ago. And it was just so busy. I watched snippets up on the news after it but I just didn't catch some of the more.
05:46
I don't know, meat of it, it was just all the highlights. Like short highlights, you know? No, totally, I totally get that. Yeah, no, but that was one thing that happened. Something else that had kind of taken place, whether it was this week or not, the SAT, which I think is interesting, I hated taking the standard eye testing when I was like trying to get into college, but the SAT is removing the essay portion and a couple subject portions, I'm pretty sure as well.
06:14
But they're removing that because basically AP testing and other kinds of testing are becoming like the standard to see if you can handle college level anymore. And it's not the SAT anymore. And it's just like, you know, this SAT was so expensive and it was like all these extra steps and things. And it really takes away from even just trying to write because you're so focused on making sure your formula is OK for the exam. You're not even worried about the content anymore. So like I'm.
06:42
personally glad they took it away. But you know. You know there's like if we added sound effects to this it'd be like the students sound, hallelujah. No exactly. Exactly. Like you know that's how kids are feeling. You know now I'm more essay part. Look I remember how big a deal the SHC was and toiling over like, like I don't.
07:03
I'm gonna be honest, I've never really toiled over studying. I'm that kid that could read something once and I memorized it. Now you could ask me two days later and I probably don't remember half of it, but I was a good memorizer. But I do remember how big of a deal all the preparation and all this stuff when you're.
07:20
getting ready for those, you know, the preparation exam. The go to like how much stuff that goes into preparing for the SAT. It wasn't even about the content anymore. Yeah, it was like just to making sure you knew what you were doing before you even walked in the room. I know. How many number two pencils do I have? They all sharpen, don't they? Yeah, exactly. Okay, but not having to write the essay, hey, God, they come up with that, what? I don't wanna age myself, 25 years ago. No, right, right? No, honestly, honestly.
07:47
at least three months ago for you, right? Ha ha ha. Yeah, it's hilarious. No, it was like seven years ago when I think about it, which is like actually a long time ago. Like that's, it feels- Damn, you are getting old. Yeah, I know, I know. Gosh, you have one birthday and then they all just become the same thing. So no, but that's happening. And so congratulations to you young kids out there that are not having to do that hellish portion of the SAT anymore. Props to you.
08:12
Times are changing. Times are definitely changing. The last like random thing that has kind of, you know, hit our radar at least is Netflix is creating a shuffle play. And I'm so excited for this feature. So it's supposed to release the first part of 2021. The date is not completely confirmed yet. But I like this anyway, because if you're stuck.
08:32
and you're like, I don't know what I'm gonna watch today. And you're just like browsing and browsing and you're basically watching more trailers than you are watching any portion of a show. You know, I guess this shuffle feature is essentially created based on your algorithm of your Netflix channel and or your profile and just your history to generate something that they think you would like. And that's just kind of the idea of the shuffle play, but so smart, right? I love it. I'm looking forward to it because I get paralysis from analysis.
09:01
my wife makes fun of me because I'm the guy that, I read reviews and I do all these things. I'm like that guy. And so I'll get bogged down with that. So just to be able, and they do make recommendations, they're usually pretty accurate. Like you'll get an email, like, you should check out these two new shows, but if I can just hit a button and then start something. The only thing that's hard about Netflix is like,
09:25
Sometimes it takes a couple episodes to kind of get into it. And it's like, there's nothing more disappointing than like getting two episodes in. You're like, I don't, and it doesn't happen often. They'd make a lot of great shows. And I would say eight out of 10 times I like them well enough to keep going.
09:41
But those two times, boys, like, damn, I could have started something else. I know, I know, I totally get that. I totally get that. I've done that before, and I'm just like, I just wasted, you know, however much I've done it. But they just crossed 200 million subscribers. I mean, I watch, I keep up on my stock watch. I'm watching, and I'm like, jeez Louise, they keep going up, with all the competition coming too. So, but they're investing, like.
10:05
I mean the billions, I forget what that's all it was, in content development, you know, because it's what it takes. I mean you gotta keep putting out the great shows and get people subscribing. I mean that's what it's all about. And anyway, booming. I love the shuffle though. Oh my gosh, yeah. And just better be good. I know, I guess. There's no telling what my mix is though because we do have different accounts for the kids, but occasionally.
10:30
we'll be in mine, we'll watch something. There's no telling, I'm probably gonna get some cartoon version of, I don't know, Sherlock Holmes. Because it's like, the algorithm's gonna be like, I don't know how to compute what they want. Okay, I give them, you know, cause I watch, we watch all this strange stuff, but then the kids watch a couple things on our account or whatever, and I'm like, oh boy. I'll notice it. So they do it for your account versus the kids? We have a kids one, but occasionally,
11:00
if you click into like the wrong one, you know, and we're sitting there usually, sort of like get into adult programming or something. But you know, if you're watching a kid, it throws the algorithm off. You're like, what is this suggestion? Like. Come on now. No, that's funny, that's funny. Soon within the world of AI, it's gonna be like make your own movie. Like, you know, like. Honestly, well do you remember when they did the one with the bandersnatch or whatever it was called, and you could.
11:28
Like you could enter in the choices of the main character as the movie would play choose your own adventure Yeah, basically. Yeah, but you know that came out too. So but anyway, yeah That's kind of the things that have kind of hit our radar at least from a weekly perspective But that's all we had here's Riley with the news. Here is the radcast news
11:50
Okay guys, so our first topic for today that is related to marketing more so. Triller who is a huge competitor of TikTok is create really entering in their competition space. I don't feel like they were ever necessarily too behind, but they're really stepping in right now and a big ad in the Superbowl advocating ways you can really tailor your own.
12:17
profile on Triller and how you can engage and that kind of thing. Did you have an opinion on this as far as like what this means for their competition with TikTok? Like what did you think about this? Well, I think it's, for one, you have to understand the dollars that are behind this when.
12:33
they're running on the Super Bowl, because you're talking five, 10, 15, 20 million dollars, depending on the length and how many, how the quantity, if it's one and done, probably five to 10 million dollars that's spending to do this. And so, then you have to realize that they're a main player, but it doesn't always mean success. I've played around with Truller, it's been a few months, it was actually probably six or eight months ago.
13:00
Cool app. It didn't have quite the editing and I don't know, fun factor that TikTok has, but the content was good. They have a lot of big partners behind it. I'll never forget, I think I saw that thing, Snoop Dogg or something. It's like one of the original Triller influencers. This is, I don't know, probably a year ago, but it's, look, there's gonna be.
13:27
other players in this space. You know, no one is gonna sit by and let one platform dominate a certain genre. No different than, you know, Snapchat was kind of all the rage with disappearing content, I'm just gonna call it that instead of trying to pronounce the word that I always butcher, but the disappearing content. Then Instagram mimics the feature. Yep, stories. And stories and all those things and so.
13:51
Triller has been around for several years, so it's not like they're brand new, but you're gonna see people move towards where the engagement's happening. And so you're gonna see a lot of competitors in the space. I'm anxious to, I didn't watch the spot, did they have the spot out yet, Triller? I didn't see it. I just saw that they were out. Correct, yeah. So it'll be interesting to see how they position it and what they do, I'm sure it'll be fun, and either have humor or.
14:14
some sentiment. Yeah, I hope it's at least engaging. It sure it will be. Yeah. Well, you say sure. See, right? Sometimes it's like they plan all this time and you're like, well, that was it. Exactly. Sometimes you're like, oh, you stand up, you know, but like, you know, Clive, this is great. But I don't know, we'll see. But it's, you're gonna see more and more players in the video, in the short form video, and all this stuff. And it's just a matter of seeing what sticks, what catches on.
14:41
So, glad they're spending a lot of money to get on Super Bowl. That is correct. Yeah, it's interesting you kind of bring up mobile a little bit and that's definitely kind of what's happening in our next topic as well. Lexus has created a new car model, but it's based on a poll they took on when they did a livestream feed on Twitch. And I really liked this because.
15:05
they're bringing in the mobile engagement, they're bringing in the users that are streaming in, and then they're basically like, okay, what is the new car gonna look like? And then it's basically like this poll to kind of create this car essentially, and obviously it's way more detailed than that. But I liked it and I love the engagement, especially because they're trying to hit that younger crowd, but anyway, loved that. I think it's...
15:28
it's again validation for the size, scope, and breadth of e-sports and what's happening in video games and all that. We talked about it on other episodes. You had KFC, you've got Mountain Dew, other brands that are venturing into this. Philadelphia cream cheese. Yeah, Philadelphia cream cheese. But Lexus actually building a car around it just shows you what they think of the market, what they think of the opportunity. And look, it's an affluent.
15:53
a group, it usually, if you look at the data, it's a pretty affluent group, especially the middle-aged, you know when I say middle-aged, I'm talking Gen Z, I'm not talking about kids here, but the Gen Z millennials that are video gamers are typically in some type of IT space or some kind of professional in something and they make decent money and so it's not out of the realm that Alexis being.
16:18
you know, that mid-tier luxury vehicle. It makes sense to, and again, if you see Lexus playing in this space, they've done the data, they've rocked the numbers. They know the impact that this can have. It's smart for them to get into an emerging market. And you know, it'll be interesting to see, I didn't see what the actual model was. Had they picked it yet or they were gonna pick it? I think, if I remember right, they were going to pick it and it was something that
16:47
from the poll, like the result of the poll is what determined the model of the car. I just honestly, I don't remember off the top of my head if it was established or not in that streaming. So I know you get this thing in mind of like.
17:01
Is it gonna have like games built into the back seat? Or something like, you know, have your friends over and, you know, y'all can take a spin and park somewhere and play video games, I don't know. Or if it's just gonna be a cool looking car, you know. Yeah, it could be a mixture of both. Because I even remember like when I was younger and you know, you'd be driving somewhere and you just like flip down the little TV and you're in the SUV. Like I imagine it might be something even to that effect too, which would be interesting to play into, but.
17:28
No, there's that piece of news to you and um another news Stella is partnering up with blue apron To create a specialized menu for the big game, which is February 7th. So Yeah You know what that you know why they call it that right? Because isn't it like a thing you can't say the Super Bowl or something there you go Because it cause because you don't want to that's how people get around
17:56
like using, like in advertising you'll see like someone promoting a TV. Come buy a TV for the big game. Because if they use the word Super Bowl, they get sued, you know, like, because it's trademarked. And so they say the big game. Anyway, I digress there, but yes. Fun piece of information. Yeah, no, but super cool that they're doing that. And again, I just think it shows the scope of, you know, cross industry and just making sure you're staying together and, you know, having this common goal.
18:26
I like that aspect because I think we're seeing more brands really get into the space of, okay, we might have two completely different products, but there's a way to merge this together for our larger audience. I like that. I think that's really cool and it's sentimental. We're all getting into that space. I think it's a good play. I think it's good. And what I don't, Blue Apron, we've tried all these at our house, like all of them. We've gone through.
18:51
Fresh Director, something like that. There's like 27 names, Blue Apron. You know, the only thing I don't like about, I like the integration of the partners and the brands with Stella and them doing this. It makes a lot of sense. You got people staying at home, less people going out. Super Bowl's usually home anyway for the big party, for the big game. Yeah, because that's trademarked too, isn't it? The big party? No, well, the other way of saying it.
19:21
The big party. Yeah, right? The big party. But I guess you gotta cook it yourself. I like it when it's already done though.
19:29
Like we went through those meals and I'm like, it's just gotta be cooked. Because Nicole's like, it's delicious, like all the food, but it was like, she spent 25 minutes and like she's got 17 things out on the counter and I'm like, and we both work. And so it's like, honey, like can we get like, you know, one of these pre-made ones, like whatever. Because y'all don't want her dealing with it or me dealing with it. I'm like, you know, we take turns, like cooking and stuff. And so like, I don't wanna put all this stuff together, but.
19:59
Yeah, I tried them once or twice like when I was in college and I just I'm just not a big cook. I just don't really enjoy it. So to do all the extra steps, what's like a Super Bowl menu item? Like is that when I go, I think pizza wings, Buffalo chicken, Buffalo chicken.
20:17
Yeah, yeah buffalo chicken dip or like oh my gosh. I I lied. There is one thing I can make It's really it's a really easy dip, but it's like a really good taco dip. It is so good I can't have any more except the amount of dairy in it, but like it's so good And it's like a dip person like I'm a grazer like I'll give you the recipe because you actually might really like I like Yeah, you give me a chip in a dip and yeah, just let me go sit in a corner somewhere. I'm like yeah Right, right
20:43
No, exactly. No, but I'm looking forward to the game. It's exciting, but it's actually funny because we're talking about just, we're getting into this alcohol conversation, ironically, in the middle of dry January, but truly seltzers decided to do.
21:00
Try January. I love this. It's targeted for millennials and Gen Z, the ones that aren't participating in dry January to try January and try these like, I think they're like exclusive, even truly flavors. Like they look very. Tea.
21:15
tea in their new lemonade, the truly seltzer, they have tea in them or something, a lemonade tea or something. Oh nice, almost like a Twisted Tea. And I like those lemonade ones, they're pretty good. Especially low carbs, like I'm trying to watch my carb count, I'll drink those, or like an ultra, I've been on an ultra kick lately. But the, I saw the Tri January and I'm like,
21:39
I don't have a problem with it. I think it's fine. But it was like, it kind of was like, kind of rubbing it in the face of, is it going too far? People are trying to stay dry and you're just going, no, just drink, just keep drinking. Yeah, but I mean it's an interesting concept. I think it's great. I don't know. I get why. I was thinking more because now it's the world we live in. It was less that it bothered me. I kind of look at things and I go, is the PC police going to come out in every?
22:09
Every single thing I'm like, are they gonna get mad at this too? Not that I care, but I just can see it like ruining a good idea. Definitely a good idea. I think it's a great idea and I think it's super, I think it's clever just the nature of targeting.
22:21
Especially more my generation, the ones that aren't necessarily doing dry-chating. We're definitely not. You're boozers out there. Yeah, no. We're not the boomers. I don't believe in these arbitrary dates. You know? You want a drink, don't drink. That's what I'm saying. If you also don't like it, then just... You want a drink, then drink. Exactly. You know? Just do everything in moderation. Absolutely. Including moderation. Ooh, that was profound. Abel Lincoln.
22:44
Oh, it was profound. Four score and seven years ago. At least they say I think Abe Lincoln gets like one of those, like he gets credited with all kinds of stuff. I'm pretty sure that one was a Lincoln. That's that's actually funny. That's funny. No. And then our last piece of news today is Walmart is trying to establish themselves as the delivery and pick up hub, basically of like groceries and retail and basically everything.
23:08
Interesting though. They're really trying to level up against Amazon and I feel like even the target delivery service or you know that kind Of thing too. So yeah, you saw this What about it like really is sparked your spark? Well Walmart's been playing catch up to Amazon and now They're catching up quickly. They're doing a good job. They bought like jet which was like a Contender in the econ space for a little while. This is like five years ago, I think
23:34
and they've done a really good job creating that Omni-channel approach. It used to be terrible where you'd have no idea what was in stock at a store versus what was online. They did a really good job with this. And then in 2017, they first trialed this direct to refrigerator, like direct to kitchen. Like literally, and I know people are gonna probably go to work to COVID, but they're picking this back up where literally people come with a key to your house.
24:02
and they stock your refrigerator and your pantries. You're stocked, like they keep it stocked. They come in, they put them in, so when you come back home, you got a full jug of milk, you've got your pantry stocked.
24:15
and supposedly they wear body cameras and all this stuff so that everything's security. And that's why I thought this was interesting. I did not know that. Because I wondered how people, supposedly it started to take off and then it slowed down a bit and now with COVID, I don't know how people are gonna feel about this, but that is the notion that literally someone comes in and keeps your entire pantry and refrigerator stocked. All right. Direct to kitchen.
24:42
Okay, so the question is would you sign up for that service? How does that service make you feel? Because I will tell you right now, I don't know that I would be comfortable. Well, you're a single female. Well, yeah. Well, I mean, that's what I'm saying. Like how many single like like I feel like the people they might be trying to target. Like I would I would not do that because I also like I just I don't know. If you're in an affluent community and you've got security in your house and it's you signed up for, you know.
25:11
I don't know. That probably would. Would you do it? I would think about it. It's a safe excuse. I could see one, I could see how, again, it was a busy household and with them coming in, like, if there was enough parameters set up, just being able to come home and it's done. Because look, I can tell you this firsthand, two nights ago.
25:34
You know, my wife sends me, I've had a hell of a day, and it's just been busy. And Nicole had to work late, she's an assistant principal, and she was working a basketball game. And she texted me to go pick up the groceries that had already been, they were already at Harris Teeter. Oh, okay, okay. To pick up. She'd done the delivery thing all night, but I had to go pick them up. Okay. I got an ash, we went and got the groceries. They get them, they put them in the car, it's nice.
26:04
But the worst part of groceries is getting them from your car into your house and putting them up. Yes. Because I've had a long day, I'm tired, I'm afraid of like veg and.
26:17
chill with Nash and read a book with him and maybe eat some dinner. And I spent, lugging the groceries up, into the, we live in a loft, so we gotta come up with the elevator, and bringing them inside, and I stared at them, and I'm going, I'm not gonna leave these from the cold, but I thought about it, I stared at the bags, I put the cold stuff up, but I'm like, not because it's her job, but it was just like, I'm at, you know, it's like, I didn't, but. I'm just gonna wait a second on this. But now, yeah, but no, I did it.
26:47
I didn't, I did pause, I put all the cold stuff up, and then I ate with Nash, and then I put the rest of it up begrudgingly. Not because it's not my job, but I just was tired if I do it. So like, I could see we're not having to deal with that. And you also probably buy, so again, this is families. We buy for four boys and two grown adults, so six people. So when we go to the grocery store, you know,
27:17
prepared. We got like dual buggies here like you know sometimes. Yeah, yeah. You know we try to buy you know Nicole goes to the store like every four like like four or five days like or I between the two of us one of us is the grocery store right right and so that's where this the people that deal with that This is seems attractive you sort of go all right. What are those security measures? Alright, I think I can get over that. That's so much you come home, and it was done. It's done
27:43
Yeah, so I don't know. I get that though. And maybe it becomes something like you get a consistent delivery guy that's no different than like someone cleaning your house or like, you know. I get that. You know, it becomes like the old school milkman, you know, like back in the day, the milk guy delivered the milk and you got to know the milkman. You get to know your food stocker. Oh, you deliver. Yeah. I get that though. But I will tell you this, I have a trick to the taking up because I am also in an apartment with elevator and parking garage, all that kind of stuff. Like a big trolley.
28:12
And this is also for anyone else that's in an apartment. So I thought about this and it makes so much more sense. I have like a trolley thing that I just load it all into and I just take it all one trip. Yep, a wagon. Yeah, it's nice and helps me, you know, my little puny arms. Wagon can't even touch. Like the wagon gets full with like the first four bags from our car. Well, we had that double wagon. Yeah. And so. Dual mode. Again, it's quite the process. Yes. And.
28:41
I could see where this would take off. And Walmart's wanting to own it, and they've definitely caught up on the e-comm space. So they're up 300% in e-comm sales like the last six months. And so.
