Hey guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the Radcast. You're listening to the latest Radcast News Update. I'm Ryan Alford, your host, and today is June 10th, 2022. It's our marketing and advertising weekly news edition. Christina Yasi, what's up? Not much, what's up with you? Oh, you know, just reading through this, just doing all our takes, and getting geared up for the podcast. Always, always ready to go. Look forward to it every week.

00:29
Mr. Weaver's a perfectionist, and he likes to get everything just right. So, got all our camera angles today. Three. Yes, three in one, folks. Exciting. So if you're listening, I'm gonna go ahead and plug. You need to be watching us on IG, IG, YouTube, Facebook. Wherever you watch your podcasts. Just not the car. Shopify, excuse me, not Shopify, Spotify. There it is. Spotify. Now it has a watch.

00:58
You can watch it on Spotify. There you go. So. We're there? Anywhere you want to watch, you need to watch it. So you can see all the angles, all the info, all the cool stuff in our room, even our cool merch, which we'll talk about shortly. Yes. It's been a good week at Radical. Mm-hmm, it has been. Been a busy week. Indeed. New clients, onboarding, and just. Yeah, lots of exciting stuff. Hustle, bustle, tussle.

01:23
All right, Dr. Seuss. Hey, you know, is that alliteration or rhyming? That was rhyming. Okay. Sorry. I didn't pass grade school or whatever. And look, you're doing great. I'm okay, it worked out.

01:39
So did you read the Morbius release? I did. I heard the office talking about it. You heard me tell you about it. Everyone knew about it but me. I had heard of it, but I didn't know all the, the ins and outs of the re-release. Enlighten us. So for our listeners who might not know, Morbius is a Marvel film, a terrible Marvel film, got horrible reviews. Jared Leto's in it. And after it was released, the internet, you know, did their thing and trolled it and started making memes that it was the best movie ever and they were gonna have,

02:09
a sequel and it was, it's Morbin Time was the tagline. And so Sony listened to the internet and said, oh, we should re-release it. So they re-released it in about a thousand theaters across the states and each theater made about $200. That sounds about right. That's what happens when you follow the trolls and you- It made like 8,500. Social movements are not always sales movements. Right, right. And all publicity is good publicity, but that doesn't mean it's money. Yeah.

02:37
I wonder if the downloads are higher though or something. Are they, you know, probably always. I don't know. It's all the popcorn at the theater, but they may be more streams, I don't know. Who knows? Somebody made money off of it. I'm gonna not watch it again. Same, same, I'm gonna not see it twice. I mean we had Queen Elizabeth's platinum Jubilee. Yes, did she even attend? Yeah, she did. Okay, I thought I saw where she did, I mean, I'm attending. Yeah, it was a testy there for a little while, but the woman's been queen for 70 years.

03:05
I just hope I live 70 years. Right? Must be the queen. And there she's met Elvis, she met Marilyn Monroe. I mean, she's been alive for a lot of wars. I don't quite get all, I'm just gonna go ahead and be American. I don't get all the royalty shit. Like, I get the history. I understand the monarchy. I get or understand it at a high level, but I don't totally get it. I feel like you're either really into it or you're not. Yeah. Like you're one of two people.

03:35
I don't really understand what powers, if it's purely just influence at this point, what powers do they really wield? Yeah, I don't know. I have fallen off of my European government, but it is interesting. Symbiotic, symbolic. Yeah, symbolic, there you go. Symbiotic, that's what we're all working together to see how symbolic it is. Nailed it, good work. Yes, nailed it, there it is, there it is. And we are gonna be starting our Tic Tacs.

04:05
Tic Tacs. I love Tic Tacs. Oh, there it is. Amen. That's who should sponsor this. Tic Tacs should sponsor. I'm making a note. Tic Tacs, stat of the week. There was a Freudian slip trying to actually work out how we get a new sponsor. You're manifesting. You're manifesting. Tic Tac, if you're listening, we need you for our Tic Tac stat of the week. It's too big to ignore people, so we're gonna talk about it. 50% of users, 40 and over, send a video to a friend after viewing it.

04:34
I struck me as high. Yeah. Cause I don't send that many videos and I may or may not be over 40. See I'm under 40, but I send probably 62% of the videos. Oh, okay. That I send to people. Again, here's another high number, 92% of users, 40 plus, plan to use the app the same amount or more in the future. Wow. So it's here to stay.

04:59
I point out these 40 plus, I think these are interesting because everybody still thinks it's a teenager platform. Not so fast, my friends. 40 plus, lots of users. And a stat we called out last week, over half of all daily users now are over 30 in the US. Wow. That's wild. There you go. And here's a big one. Growing nearly five million users a week. That doesn't surprise me at all. Wow. That's wild. That one, I was like, whoa.

05:29
I mean, how many people on the planet are there? I guess there's billions. Yeah. But still, five million. It's the fastest growing social media platform in history. And it's, I mean, it is, it's free marketing. The last show I did, one of the girls is obsessed with her TikTok, and she like was the sole marketing arm, it felt like for the show, she would just make all these TikToks and the theater would repost everything. And it-

05:50
A lot of engagement. You know, I'm on the platform. I post pretty regularly. I'm verified there. Yeah, somehow. I don't know why. I really don't. But with that said, I do get on it. And I went down the vortex rabbit hole last night and got locked in. I'm telling you, it was like 40 minutes and I thought it was like four. You know, it was like, whoa, where? I mean, luckily, the kids are bad. Like, it's like nine. I'm kind of halfway watching the NBA game.

06:19
And like, you know, I got, I got every, I got so many tips on cooking, golf. It's so positive. I love TikTok. My every interest is shining through. It's like golf, country music, some extreme guys fighting each other, like, and I don't know what else. Nothing's very difficult about you at all. And then tips on everything. No dude stuff at all. I'm like, okay, great. You know. I know mine's like makeup stuff. And a lot of theater, a lot of theater and comedy.

06:49
Hey, too big to ignore. If you need help with it, give us a ring. Because TikTok is blowing up. And go follow me, Ryan.Alford on TikTok. We got some Radcast news. We do. We had our two hundred and fiftieth episode this week with J.J. with Ace of Spades Agency. It's a big number. Yeah. Congratulations to you.

I was hungry when I did this. Yes, I was. Yeah, I was about to say, you're making me, these holidays are making me thirsty, hungry.

10:20
Pretzels are making me thirsty. So today is national egg roll day. I Like an egg. I love an egg roll, you know, I like Chinese food in general and Egg rolls are delicious one time. I don't think you could you know, it sucks up

10:36
Soy sauce like you like dump half a container in there and just keep so yeah. Oh, yeah, it's like I can barely taste it I get more MSG in this mofo Thanksgiving where we took extra we had I was in Massachusetts with my family and we took our extra Thanksgiving leftovers and wrapped them in Like egg roll wrap and fried them and had Thanksgiving egg rolls. They were phenomenal. Give me some moogoo guy Pam

11:04
I've become, my son Nash, who just turned six, or recently turned six.

11:11
That dude can eat, put down some beef lo mein, let me tell you. Dude can eat the large beef lo mein on his own and save nothing for daddy. And I've become kind of a beef lo mein fan as well. Pretty tasty, those noodles. Oh man, I love lo mein. We like to make you hungry here on the Radcast. So what's Saturday? What are we celebrating on Saturday? Saturday, National Corn on the Cob Day. All American. All American day. Corn on the Cob. I like some good corn on the Cob. Same. With some Parmesan cheese and butter. Oh yeah.

11:41
Yeah, yeah, yeah, three corn. Yep. You got it. Love it National German chocolate cake day is also tomorrow. Do you like German chocolate cake? Absolutely not really not like coconut? Okay, that is a shame I will not be celebrating that day. It's not my favorite on the day off today You you know what we can do with that We don't have strong opinions my mom would always like she's a great dessert cooker

12:08
and sometimes we'd have parties or whatever. And I'd go in and you know, you're a kid, you're looking forward to like, you know, dessert, right? Right. Damn German chocolate cake sitting on the aisle. This is like, this is the biggest buzzkill ever. Like, I dealt with chicken and rice because I was gonna get that damn cake and it's German chocolate. And there's coconut involved. Coconut. I mean, who wants that stuff in your teeth? I love coconut, but I want coconut cake. I don't want it in my chocolate cake. You like coconut? No, I don't want that stuff in my teeth. See?

12:34
That's what I'm saying. It has no flavor really. And then it's like. See a good coconut cream cake. I'm here for that. Just a weird texture. I'm here for that. Read my lips. No. I'm gonna be celebrating Sunday though. Sunday is World Gin Day. Do you like gin?

12:50
I think I've told this on the Radcast before, but if you didn't listen, yes, I used to like gin quite a bit. I drank gallons of it in college. It was my drinking choice. Bombay Sapphire Gin. That was what I started with. The blue bottle was so cool. I thought I was so cool in college. Oh, I got my blue Bombay Sapphire. Oh yeah. And I drank the shit out of it for three years in college and I don't think I've had one since. I actually had one like...

13:13
a couple years ago, I was like, it's pretty, I think I was ready, I'm ready now. It's been 24 years. Now I'm ready to have one again. Maybe go with Tangere this time. Tangere number 10 is my genum joys. Yes, Tangere is good. And what else is that? Red rose day. Yeah, I put that in there for Nicole. Hmm, yeah.

13:33
You have to remind me. You're welcome. I'll I'll be celebrating early the June 13th International Axe Throwing Day. Oh, are you going axe throwing? Nope. OK. You know, you're throwing at me. I'll be dodging axes if I don't get some roses around here. Have you gone axe throwing? I have. I'm terrible. You know where I asked? Doesn't really count.

13:56
Dave and Buster's has the plastic. It does not count. With my kids, hey, you know, say. It is true. You know, I'm not sure you want me with a throwed axe. A friend of mine went on a date. He took her axe throwing after they got drinks and she was just like, I felt very weird that he intoxicated me and then gave me a sharp object. Yeah, that is a little weird. It's a choice. It looks fun, I just have it. We've talked about bowling. I'm bad at it. And it's like never worked out, but I think I'd be pretty good at it. Team building exercise. Yes, we should, plan it.

14:25
Okay, uh national kitchen clutches of America day. I have no fucking idea what that national kitchen clutses clutses Clutsy in the kitchen. I put this in there for me kitchen clutses. Yeah, like you can't cook stranger Are you kitchen cluts? Thanks. Oh, yeah. Oh I am I will like have grand ideas to cook and then I get home and I don't have half of the utensils Actually a pretty damn good cook

14:51
That's a secret you don't know about me. I was a sous chef in college for a while. Were you really? Yes. And I actually know my way around the kitchen pretty well. What's the good thing to make? A dish called twin filets. Oh. With a little Parmesan cream sauce and a little prosciutto burned off with a little cognac. I would have never guessed. I'm shaking not stirred. Oh yes, yes. I am pretty handy in the kitchen.

15:21
Minimini talents. Yes. I'm gonna be celebrating early this weekend. National Bourbon Day. There you go. See bourbon's the one that I can't drink. Oh yeah, you gotta have a bourbon. Oh I got wildly sick on it once and haven't been able to since. Yeah. I like the smell though. Hallelujah. Flag Day. Flag Day and it's the 246th birthday of the US Army. Which is pretty fantastic.

15:47
Okay. Yeah, that's cool. We've had all these military holidays here recently. Indeed. I guess it's the summer. It is the season. It is. Yeah, it is. It is. And with that, we have a special sweet treat for our listeners as well. We do. Yeah. And I'm excited about this because here's the deal. It's become a very non-personal corporate environment. And with people, we have very we have digital experiences on this.

16:17
but gifting still works for driving influence. And you know what people like to get? Stuff that you eat. And you know what I like? I like Grove Cookie Company. They sent us some samples a few months ago. To die for. Let's just say, I don't know how to even a sweets guy, I may or may not have taken my unfair share. There was like six cookies and I think I had three of them. Oh my goodness. And then they did send an extra pack after that. I just said, dude.

16:46
These are delicious. Phenomenal. I was like, so good. Grove Cookie Company. You can order them, they ship nationwide. They are womaned, they're owned by a woman and a veteran. Which is amazing. You're supporting, I mean, look, how can you not wanna support that? Women owned, veteran owned, all American. And delicious, I'm talking, I'm telling you people, I am not a huge dessert person. And he was a sous chef. And I was hiding cookies at my desk. He knows what he's doing, he was a sous chef. I was, I was a sous chef for about.

17:13
eight months, but it was long enough to learn all the tricks of the trade. But you know what I didn't learn to make is cookies like this. Otherwise, I would have started this fresh homemade taste ship nationwide. And I can vouch the fact that they actually taste it. So I was skeptical. I was like, are these going to taste freshly made? You know, they got shipped here. No, they tasted about like they'd been made 10 minutes earlier. So they weren't warm. But I'll tell you what they were.

17:40
They were gone. Cookies! There you go. GroveCookieCompany.com, get on there and order. You can send a custom note with your logo. This is how you get relationships now. It's not about cold emails. It's not about texting people that don't know you. It's about sending them some cookies. It's affordable and it leaves an impression. Go use Radcast 15. You'll get 15% off your first order. GroveCookieCompany.com.

18:07
This is how you build relationships, people. And this is how you make up with anyone that's mad at you. Send them some cookies. Send them to your enemies. Like we said. Nationwide, you don't have to be or worry about it local. You can get fresh cookies sent nationwide with grovecookiecompany.com. Tell them Radcast 15. And you'll thank us later. Yeah. And with that, trends in the metaverse.

18:40
Hard stop. Hard cut. We love it. Right into it. Here we go. What you got for me on South Korea? So South Korea is recruiting companies for Metaverse content creation project. We talked about this a little bit last week with South Korea being on board with the Metaverse and according to a report in the Korean language publication, the goal of the project is to engender trust in the Metaverse across the country.

19:05
for companies, four companies will be selected to participate in the project and each one will receive approximately $160,000. Does it have to be a South Korean company? Can we get in on that? I wish, right? I did recently. Did you apply for it? No, it's only in South Korea. I did try though. We are like literally top 60 podcasts in South Korea. Oh, we love our South Korean listeners. Yes, so if you're listening, get us on that list. Yeah. We can create some metaverse content. We would love to do that.

19:32
The director of software policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT said the project is being Promoted as part of the metaverse new industry leading strategy We will work hard to lay the groundwork for Korea to leap forward as a leading nation in the metaverse by providing Content that can be enjoyed by various age groups and support for creative activities of creators Yeah, this is fascinating. It is fascinating. I

19:57
I'm going to I think we're going to have to like continue to follow where this goes. Yeah, I want to see where this from from the original talk last week. And it probably won't be every week updates, but like, let's see. Yeah, I have my my eye on it. Yeah, totally. I'm I'm hoping for the Olympics in the metaverse so that maybe I can actually you know, be a sous chef in the I can throw a javelin at least 700 yards. I was a Max in the metaverse. You know what I'm saying? Dave and Buster's. Yes.

20:25
Oh yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I mean, look, I had this discussion with Tom Roach, who's gonna be joining, we recorded yesterday. We talked about the metaverse and it's gaming. I mean, it's a game. Yeah, it is, it is. It's like, that's where it started, but that's kind of still what it is. And it feels that fringy, yeah. So, you know, let's simplify around here.

20:51
So this, we talked about this a couple months ago. We talked about it. I said it wasn't a surprise. It was coming. Theft, fraud and lawsuits. The world's biggest NFT marketplace. OpenSea, one of the highest profile crypto startups is facing, not faking, a backlash over stolen and plagiarized NFTs.

21:18
They got in my closet and they took those NFTs. I knew they were. I mean, my goodness. But they got in your mobile closet. Can you imagine losing that much money though? No, I can't. The company's clashes with users illustrate some of the central tensions of Web3, a utopian vision of a more democratic internet controlled by regular people rather than tech giants. I mean.

21:41
That's what I'm saying. Everybody wants it open and free, but there's no regulation at all. Right. You're going to have bad players that ruin it for everyone. Exactly. It's anarchist. So, yeah, not surprised. You've got, you know, all this hiding behind, you know, avatars and everything else. You have no personal identification. I think that he was trying to sell one for like a million dollars and he was only given, what, three hundred grand? Yeah. And they couldn't.

22:10
There's a reason why we don't have the wild wild west anymore. Right, right. I mean, I know, but look, I'm all for low government involvement. I don't like lots of government involvement, but there needs to be some involvement. Yeah, I just believe there are people smarter than I am. Because it's like the wild, wild west, you know? Yeah, for as much of an advancement as this is, there's still a lot of evolution that has to take place. We need the boys in blue to get in the metaverse. You know?

22:39
We need something. Don't defund the police. You need to fund the police in the metaverse. Run that campaign, Nick. Fund them, fund them hard in the metaverse. Yes. Yeah. And then we have per usual Prada plans monthly product NFT drops feeding into the growing metaverse hype among brands Prada is releasing a time capsule NFT collection, which features gender neutral physical products and gifted non-pungible tokens, NFTs.

23:09
The company announced in a Monday press release. They're also launching Prada Cryptid, which is a community server. And it's kind of like the Gucci town that we talked about last week, where you can just kind of, you know, get together and trade your trade, your Prada's. Yep. This is like, yeah, it's cool. Well, like PacSun's doing it. GameStop is doing it.

23:31
I like as long as you got the online, offline connection. Right. You know, like you're connecting the experiences, you're creating loyalty, you're doing things, you know, you're playing into the trend, but you're creating brand engagement online and offline. Because the reality is, for the short term, however short or long that is, people smarter than me will determine that, you still gotta sell a lot of physical goods. Yes. And it makes sense to start building that connection online. Yeah.

23:59
through these things, but if you can build loyalty through it for both, wherever this goes, so you have that connection. So if it does, if this becomes everything, people think it will be in the next 10 years. And I think we're, again, it's back to that gaming. It's gonna be a place we spend time. I believe that. I think no different than like me talking about the Vortex with TikTok for 40 minutes last. I could see...

24:29
Whenever the technology catches up to a, you know, universal place, right, you know, maybe spending 30 or 40 minutes doing it like a game or an experience or something. So I can see that coming. And then like anything else, you'll have people to spend too much time there, you know, just like Instagram and Facebook. And you'll have people who make billions being involved and call of duty. Yeah. You know, like, yeah, there's a lot of people that.

24:55
All they do is play video games. And they make money with Twitch. And all they do is spend time in the metaverse. Yeah. It's true. But this is cool. I like it. Yeah. Wonderful pistachios. I love some pistachios. I love pistachios. Nicole's gotten on this binge here recently. We've been snacking on pistachios, like on the front porch at our house. And I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Do you buy them shelled or unshelled? Shelled. Yeah.

25:22
completely shelled, not even popped open. We use our teeth to get in there. No. Hardcore. We have pistachio crackers. The nutcracker doesn't work. You gotta get a pistachio cracker. No. You're not gonna take to eat a bag of pistachios if you had to crack like really totally crack it up. But you gotta, I don't think they taste as good as. I agree. They gotta be in the shell still. Nope, I totally agree with you. Wonderful Pistachios deploys baby Groot.

25:51
for plant-based protein push. Wonderful Pistachios and Marvel Studios have teamed on a campaign that deploys Baby Groot to promote the snack nut brand as a source of plant-based protein for a news release. I like it. I love it. Disney just owns everything. I can't say that I'm brand loyal to all my pistachios to date.

26:13
but maybe I will be. But I do find that. I will find that this is planting a mineral memory in my brand. So I probably will buy a wonderful pistachios next time. I don't even think about, I just buy the bag. Then I guess that's the point of this is you'll buy the one with Groot on it. Yes. Well, this is the type of product I think that needs some type of extension like that. It's got to attach itself to something totally. Some borrowed interest. Absolutely. This makes sense to me. Sometimes people have borrowed interest that don't necessarily need it.

26:43
Right, right. But Pistachio probably does by just the nature of my own focus group. Right, right, right. But I. Based on your research. My research that I've never thought about the brand of Pistachio that I bought, but maybe I should. Maybe do a taste test here on the Radcast. There you go. Seeing a taste test, I think we should do vodka. Per our next article, Absolute mixes cocktail personalities in their biggest campaign in over a decade. Hallelujah.

27:11
After several years of regional marketing, Absolute returns today with what the brand says is its biggest global campaign in over a decade. Have you seen this ad? I have not. It's a really, really cool commercial. The world of Absolute Cocktails, born to mix, sees the brand anthropomorphizing classic vodka cocktails as human characters with different backgrounds and different characters. So in the commercial, each cocktail is a person and they're not in cocktail costumes, but they look

27:40
vaguely like what that drink would be. So you have a cosmopolitan and a Bloody Mary. And it's, you know, to show that everything everybody mixes. Born to mix, born to mix. I'm just going to give you for getting through anthropomorphizing. I was like, there's no way she's a word nerd. She's a word nerd. I would not have gotten through that. I would have like struck through that. I've used that word in papers before. Really? Yeah. Do you know what it means?

28:09
Sort of. Humanizing. Yeah. Anthropology is usually instead of humans or something. I was kind of working my way there. To anthropomorphize the cocktails. I don't pretend to be the smartest guy ever, but I can piece it together. Oh, I'm not smart. I'm just a nerd. But yeah, so they anthropomorphized the cocktails as characters. Nick's always anthropomorphized.

Immortizing stuff. He's got a little bit of a problem with it. Personifying is another one, another option. A synonym if you will. But yeah, it's a cool commercial. It's definitely worth a watch. I just like boredom to mix. Better when they come together. And remember, look, I'm gonna get nostalgic on you here. And today's podcast brought to you by Absolute Vodka. Someday. Just kidding. But Absolute is.

28:59
I remember growing up, it was like the first liquor that I remember marketed. Cause they had the Absolut bottles and like, it was cool. Like the Absolut t-shirts and it was like, they started getting the different flavors and stuff. But I don't know what it was or something cool about Absolut. It was like, I don't know, somewhat, I don't know.

29:16
exclusive or something. There was all kinds of other branding and marketing. Like I remember this as a teenager. Smear and Off is the first one that I remember, but I guess that would probably make sense given our age difference. Yeah, age difference. What are you saying? I'm old. So this is cool. This is fun. The world of absolute cocktails. Here for it. We have a little TikTok news.

29:40
We do. And by speaking of nostalgia, this is like right high school. They came out a little before my high school time and we talked a little bit about, remember the naked people at the front door at Abercrombie and Fitch is using Tik Tok to reintroduce the brand and reflect back who our consumer is today. Cause it's obviously changing. Yes. It used to be.

30:06
sex cells, abs and no face and bikinis or whatever. You know, I, I, I, I'm very heterosexual, but for whatever reason, I remember. Yes. Quite. Swing one way over here. It just, that's just me, but I just uniquely remember always the half naked dudes at the front door or whatever. Oh yeah. I run black Friday.

30:34
It was like, I remember that more than actually member of the girls, like, because this don't remember. Yeah. They, they, I don't remember having them being there being women. That was kind of the iconic stuff, but it was kind of aspirational. I was like, I don't look like that, dude. Right. I had friends who'd be, who would be going and be scouted and be asked to be, you know, front door models and they made no money. No, but they had the cred. So they're using Tik TOK to reintroduce the brands to millennials and Gen Z. Good, good place to be folks. Yep.

31:02
The hundred third 30 year old brand is running a paid and organic ad strategy on the platform as well as working with Tik TOK creators to do so. The reintroduction follows Abercrombie and Fitch overall brand transformation in recent years as it slowly shed its reputation of prepperly preppy exclusivity for early odds.

31:25
Uh, they're trying to become more inclusive. I think it's great. Which makes sense in today's environment. And I think it's with the towns. And even style wise, their designs are a lot better. You know, it's not just a t-shirt that says Abercrombie and Fitch, it's a little bit more trendy, a little more mainstream. I just like the fact that they're using the exact platform that they should be using. Yeah.

31:46
working with influencers, doing the right content. And so they're checking all the boxes for what brands should be thinking about. They are. And it does give me nostalgia, wherever they're going. Oh, totally, totally, totally. I mean, I remember having the jeans that were just way overpriced or whatever, but they were some damn good-fitting jeans, you know? They were good jeans. They were. Hollister was too. But Hollister's kind of falling off the face of the earth. Yeah, I haven't seen Hollister. And they weren't quite as, I didn't feel like quite as

32:16
exclusive is Abercrombie. They weren't. I thought they were a little more inclusive. And they were a little cheaper. Surfed people-ish. Right, that was West Coast, Abercrombie was East Coast. Based on what I remember. Yeah. The Hull shirt kinda came around after I was like out of college, I was like, oh, I'm not wearing a Hull shirt. You know, I'm in my professional. It's too young for me. Yeah. I'm gonna wear my golf shirt and button-ups. Right, right, right, there you go. But cool. Yeah. Tight 30 minute window there. Good episode. Indeed.

32:44
