What you’ll take away
  • Stranger Things season 4 crossed one billion hours viewed in 28 days, making it the only English-language Netflix show to hit that mark alongside Squid Game.
  • YouTube Shorts has reached 1.5 billion users, giving marketers who aren't ready for TikTok a short-form option with a different demographic and a familiar editing interface.
  • Brands of every size are past the point of debating TikTok presence — the advice is to be on the platform testing it, since roughly half of users are over 30.
  • Don't repurpose Facebook or Instagram content on TikTok: use the native creation tools, assign someone internally or work with influencers who know the platform, and 'don't make ads, make TikToks.'
  • Spend time consuming TikTok yourself before publishing — watching what works builds the instinct for the platform, and creator recommendations there drive real purchases.
  • Miller Lite's Mary Lisle limited-edition cans are raffled off, which lets the brand collect first-party consumer data as third-party cookies disappear.
  • Coke earned the highest Stranger Things product placement value so far at $1.83 million over the first 28 days, and Lacoste's exposure was valued around $1.8 million.
  • Product placement is how an ad-supported Netflix can reach viewers who fast-forward through commercials, and placements can potentially be swapped out after the fact.
  • Experiential activations like the Modelo x Takis temperature-controlled vending machine at an iHeartRadio block party are expected to pick up as COVID restrictions and behavior changes subside.

Hi, this is Brad and he's starting again. You're listening to the rad cast. If it's radical, we cover it. Here's your host, Ryan Alford. Hey, guys, what's up? Welcome to the latest edition of the rad cast is Friday, July 8, 2022, or weekly marketing and advertising news. I'm joined, like, oh, who's pristine and got back again. Here we are, summer, summer time. I feel like I need DJ jazzy Jeff, like one summer, summer, summer, time. I know it is. It's officially started. It officially started. It just feels summary. It's hot as hell here in South Carolina. And I don't know, like, even clients seem a little bit on the summertime. They're a lot, they're always a little sweaty. A little damp. Making a sweaty. But I feel like everything's a little summer laid back.

Christina Yasi1:02

I don't know. Have a nice long weekend. It did have a good long weekend. July 4 was good. They stopped. There's fireworks all over the lake. But they used to do them in our marina and they haven't done it last two years. Oh, yeah. And it's not quite the same being elsewhere. We can see them. But we didn't have a good force. It was fun. Good. Did you do anything excited? My brother was in town. So we grilled out. So you did the hot dog eating contest. Exactly. Exactly. I won. You were the champion next to Joey Tessna, right? Yes. How did you know? How did you know? Do you even eat hot dogs? Yes, I love hot dogs. Okay. I love hot dogs. All right.

Ryan Alford1:44

Yeah. I'll take a hot dog over a burger any day. Yeah. I did not have a hot dog. We had barbecue on Sunday. That's okay. We had grilled burgers. Yeah. So yeah. You did, you did right. It's something. Yeah. But I do love good hot dog. It's so good. I have to have one of those. A baseball game. Oh, yeah. Nothing better. So your brother was in town. Yeah. So we grilled out. No, very sure. I went to the lake with my boyfriend's family on Sunday, which was fun. Oh, yeah. How's that relationship going? It's good. I did a half a delta eight gummy and was violently ill for the last half of the day. Really? Yes. Okay. Yes. Have you done them before? No.

Christina Yasi2:25

It's father gave it to me. And he was like, I've never seen someone react like that. It was horrible. I don't need it. Within 30 minutes, the whole room just rippled. And I was growing up. It was all. So never again. No. Yeah. Hot dog did not taste as good coming back up. But. Oh. Too much. Too soon. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Man versus food. That's what they did. That's what it was. So we'll go over here. But that's a good segue. Casey was good. Man versus food. There you go. Host. Casey Web. If you didn't listen, you need to check that out. Two last Tuesday's episode. Casey was awesome. Nice. Nice guest ever. So fun. And he likes my glasses. Yeah. So yes.

Ryan Alford3:19

And next week, Darren Prince, author, sports agent, speaker, really emotional episode, maybe the most emotional episode ever, Darren went through substance abuse. But he was these. He still is the agent for Magic Johnson, Hulk Hogan, Dennis Rodman, some big stars. Yeah. And his represent in the long time. But he had some really tough rollercoasters with substance abuse and has been sober for 11 years. But he got real transparent about that journey about, you know, being at the high of the highs, literally physically, and then the low and lows. And I think Irrae will get a lot out of that learning from him, learning from, you know, what he's been through and, you know, how you truly kind of have to find happiness in the right places.

And so check it out next Tuesday, July 12th, Darren Prince, sports agent to the stars. And yeah, I finished Stranger Things last night, season four, very dark and very good. And that's the last season, right? It's done now. Yes. Okay. Now, the only thing, and I don't need any hate mail, because I love Stranger Things. And it was dark and it was good. And I thought some of the writing was amazing in the season. But it felt a little all over the place. And there was a few little plotlines that kind of bugged me after the fact, a little bit. But everything being so grand in the storyline and some of the stuff they did, like as a whole, I was like, I'm nitpicking, but there's a few little things.

Christina Yasi4:56

What was it a satisfying ending? It was, but it's just, it was more a can't wait till season five, because they're tying it all together. And it was definitely a hang cliffhanger. So there is another season. Oh, one more season. Okay. That's nice. And so, but I got to get caught up. Yeah. They really do. Big things. And they just crossed one billion hours streamed in the last, in 28 days. And it's the only English speaking show. I think that's hit that number. Yeah. The only other one was Squid Game, which is, you know, not English. Yes, it wasn't. That was another great show. I didn't watch that one either. Oh, come on. That was the one I was like, it's too, I'm like, my inner hipster was like,

Ryan Alford5:37

I'm meeting some blueberries. I can celebrate that one. I do love blueberries I could have like a blueberry mixed drink or something Yeah, blueberry vodka. I count absolutely vodka always always There we go Bokka post counts and I'm definitely gonna have this if I can remember it Because my kids usually have the sugar keys later on they're like 800 calories Oh, yeah, and we're every single one. Yeah, so Make your sugar cookies my aunt used to make the Diane used to make the best sugar cookies. They're my favorite

Ryan Alford8:38

She still does, but that's having a while and Diane if you listen to this there should be some sugar cookies We love our cookies on this podcast, don't we do we do and I know you'll be celebrating this. I will be Sunday No, kitten day. Yes, is does the marvelous mr. Marshall get any special treats on national kid today? Absolutely, so probably not No, I'll give him I'll give him something. We've been like wet food or something. Yeah, he's not totally a kitten But whatever. Yeah, all you kid and lovers out there take care of your gift for babies It's also this is this I could get behind a day. I'm gonna have to definitely celebrate this national peanut a lot of day is Sunday

Christina Yasi9:19

Yes, I like a good peanut. I don't like peanut and I don't like coconut Interesting, but peanut colladas that do not have coconut pieces in like just straight. I see sure Yeah, yeah, how I end goodness, you know, that's alcohol. Yeah, I'll get back on that. Do you do like the blended ones? Oh, yeah I mean, I don't go to a restaurant like you'll never see me to restaurant with a peanut collada and like a you know Cherry on bralas. I'll have a peanut collada No, however at the lake or in a party somebody's like blended up some peanut colladas Right, I'm the same way with no heat. I was like if they're homemade. I'll be there for it made You know, I'm making them myself. No, I'm more to make more likely to make a margarita

Ryan Alford10:01

There you go. Yeah, that's a good margarita's last week. It's God pretty good. Made them myself There's some extra. Yeah, there you go. There you go. Hey, but trick with the margarita is at pillow grandma and yay on top There it is. Yeah chef in another life. So there's your social holidays. Yeah, we do have some TikTok news today skipping the Metaverse news. We're what's straight to TikTok news because we know you need to know it What's on the first tip here? So YouTube's TikTok rivalry is going to impact video strategies YouTube shorts, which is the rival for TikTok is Has just reached 1.5 billion users So if you're in the marketing industry and you're not totally sure you want to deal with TikTok YouTube shorts is a great way

Christina Yasi10:45

In another platform to engage with your customers and it also is a little bit of a different demographic So good to keep that in mind as well It is and here's what I'll say. I do not use YouTube shorts, but my kids Do because my kids are too young to be on social media, right? So I'm not going to let them be on TikTok. Maybe with their own accounts, right? And I'm not going to let them be on Facebook or But through I do let them get on guided YouTube because we have parental controls on that yeah And they do the shorts all the time now right so they're totally into it So it's a thing and I think if you're either a lifelong youtuber and or young

Ryan Alford11:28

You're probably doing it and maybe there's a lot of other people I just haven't gotten in that for and the editing process is a little bit I think it's a little bit easier as far as if you're familiar with the YouTube interface So just something interesting keep in mind while we're keeping TikTok at the forefront of our conversation. Yes, and this is an article from Forbes.com talking about Marketing strategy every branch should embrace on TikTok There's three key takeaways here and I support the number one brands need to have a presence on TikTok It's past the point you need to be there. I don't care if you're a small medium large You need to be testing the platform indeed to be on there. There's a lot of eyeballs too many 50% or over 30

So you need to be on there testing it see if you can get momentum and building your brand there And then it's interesting because What you need to do is you need to really work with influencers and or Internal on your business have some people that can create that know the platform Because you've got to create the right content. This is not just Throw a video up there. I throw off, you know something you post it on Facebook. Right. It's not an Instagram story It's got to be a little more curated than that. That's right So use the creation tools have you know the internal on your team You know how your house bigger bigger smaller team is but someone should be kind of in charge of it

Or you hire an agency like radical to do it for you and Don't make ads make TikToks But that's a good t-shirt actually the um and and what that's back to the other comment It's just that's to the point that It's a different platform and the engagement levels are different and the attention span is short And you really do need to make tiktoks You need to use the editing platforms need to and I'll even say this Spend You know tiktoks not paying us yet But spend some time on the platform and go through it and kind of absorb you'll get to know and see What other people are doing right right and that will you'll understand the notion of making tiktok right and there's a trust with tiktok

Christina Yasi13:32

You know like there are people I follow I trust their opinion and I have Spent my hard-earned money based on someone's recommendation on tiktok more than I think any other platform So there you have it some of your tiktok tips there you go coming at you of the day here on the Radcast So we got her some other Marketing and advertising news the week we do we kind of tease this last week. We didn't get to it I love this. I think this is great old spice has teamed up with Arby's to tackle the meat sweats Yes, which I mean did you have the meat sweats on I will say yes I had a win and visited a potential client yesterday up the mountain in North Carolina and

Ryan Alford14:12

I had our beats for lunch and it made me think of this I did not have the meat sweats luckily. There you go. That's good. There's an air-condition car and eating more of peace sandwich But uh it did it both makes me cringe and laugh at the same time yeah but They've teamed up to tackle the meat sweats where diners perspire profusely after eating a meat heavy meal The phenomenon has cropped up in pop culture in various places like friends And coverage of competitive eating competitions like the hot dog competition. I won this past weekend Uh, and it the combination. Oh, I really do Hey, oh my god, I walked right into that one. Jesus Christ Um Sorry, it's fine. I'm not reading anything at all

Christina Yasi14:53

Um, where was I this is a great team collaboration with um men who sweat and also need old spice deodorant And I'm gonna let you know look. It's this is fun. There you go. They're playing off of you know People talk about this stuff We had Casey Webb on who gets who talked about the meat sweats last week But in all seriousness, it's uh It's a smart collab it is and you know what? I can't stop thinking of like old spices. I think the What's the guy that's half horse have have uh the the scintar scintar. Yeah, I don't think it's the meat sweats Probably Kind of is like half meat right right half man. Aren't we all in the sense? Yeah Exactly so uh, I did I do like good arby sandwich with the arby sauce

See, I like the french fries They're curly. Oh, yeah. Yes. I had the curly fries yesterday So tasty it was a good for me. I'm just gonna tell you like it is But I didn't I hadn't really had breakfast and had had a client meeting earring all so like Cheated a little Cheating a lot this summer, but hey, it's a summer. It's summertime Jazzy Jeff. Yep, cute Jazzy Jeff This was fun. Miller Light honors female brewer Mary Lyle with limited edition cans So I did see these cans Over the weekend actually so the name Mary Lyle will replace the traditional Miller Light logo In the same font instead of a fine pills and a rear surrounding the moonlight crest copy will read There's no beer without women

Ryan Alford16:30

Snaps That's more there's more truth to death and then you're lost the back of the canned features Lyle's portrait, you know, I do much better with one once I've had a few Hey, oh Hi, kid. It's okay. She does better ride with beer with me. Uh, I could tell you her. She's can't tell her me There it is, you know true honesty So the brand will raffle off the cans giving the company an opportunity to click first party data on its consumers We like that Increasingly export its important step is average hazardous prepare for third party cookies Additionally the initiative comes after a slew of brands traditionally associated with men take greater steps to reach out to women This comes to us from the marketing dive the marketing dive calm

So this is cool and Money I saw We had this article. I think teed up for last week. We got overwhelmed with all the other news, but I saw another thing on the TV About this this week, so it's fun and on You know it'll be interesting to see Like I guess Indy raffle takes off now with these large brands. It's so much fairness. Right. I wonder how much Data they'll be able to collect one interesting because Miller Light's been known for very Very masculine Very masculine commercial. So I think it's a taste great. Let's really rebrand. Yeah But Mary Laugh, I guess was we'll see one of the first women brewers. Yep. Okay In the industry no beer without women the women always brewing up the best shit, you know come on

Christina Yasi18:15

Can we have something we like to start shit? That's for sure Yes, yes, so McDonald's strengthens its gaming creator ties with offline tv sponsorship Gen Z Yes, it's first major sponsor of offline tv a collective of online content creators focused On the gaming space Donald said the deal aligns with its ongoing commutes to highlight diversity and media the fast food chain has continued to build out its connection to the gaming world Is it chases Gen Zers or glued to the channel and put greater stock in what online influencers have to say What say you it's like I mean, it's like free marketing, you know, yeah, there's kind of going for That generation and I think it's again, I think it's very very smart. It's the way to stay ahead of it

Ryan Alford19:05

I know you know, they had that thing with their app last week that we talked about yes, yes, and it's uh It's interesting I You grow up as a kid you eat happy meals, right? So you have you know, they get nostalgia, you know, we I grew I always took my kids we had hotcake Fridays like 180 Fridays in a room you got broken up purely by a covid pandemic When they stop letting people go in the in the location it tends to wreck things um But it's interesting the the the handoff like How do teenagers feel about McDonald's? I guess they love it, you know, right? Right like I and I couldn't I'm not a teenager, but I couldn't tell you the last time I went to McDonald's

Like I and I don't even I don't think about it either and maybe that's just like, you know, purely personal but I do associate it more with teens kids like, you know, I'm like a younger or you know Desperate on your own I would need McDonald's if my kids didn't and I and I tend to avoid it and not because Like my nose is up in the air like 40 to 80 like I don't go to McDonald's like I had Harvey just Like it's not an anti-fast thing But you'll think Barbies over McDonald's if it's just you because I think I've gotten is an adult I've gotten to where if I'm gonna have a burger There's a lot of other fast food like good burger places now

Like and if I'm gonna have a fast food what I'm gonna have like a frame-broll flamethrower old big burger king when Over McDonald's that's just me having my adult taste now, but you know like the McDonald's burger doesn't they for me now? I mean now chicken nuggets pretty damn good That's why I go to like drunk food. Yeah, but my kids like if if they're like mandating me donals We'll go you get the head of the nugs get the nugs nice But uh, yes another play here from McDonald's you love to see it and back on our our Stranger Things venture Coke and LaCosta see significant value for Stranger Things product placement. Did you catch those brands? Well, you're watching it. I did catch coke. I can't say I remember LaCosta. Yeah

Uh Now that I you say it. I think I remember the guy one of the guys having a t-shirt the little alligator thing man, I had me some That's a good grammar had me some LaCosta Search and I was growing up. Oh, I bet you did this thing has come like full circle. I was like seven years old I'm a little alligator, you know, that was cool. It surprised me that that was the brand But coke has the highest placement value of any brand so far with 1.83 million dollars I wonder what they paid for it Is that because I think that's the value that people are assigning to it right the number of people that watch it I doubt they paid that no, I would be shocked

Christina Yasi21:44

um But then LaCosta paid 1.0 or is worth 1.8 million Um, an exposure for the first 28 days of those episodes really says and You know to come to think of it. I did really crave a coke this morning Uh, it's been there. It's been there I was so Consciously that was watching it turn your things. I was really craving like a cherry coke zero. Oh, those are my favorite Oh, so good. You know what they're really good with Crown Vanilla Two totally different directions there Crown Vanilla, which is really sweet. I gotta admit, but it mix it with Cherry coke zero. Okay. Thank me later. Okay, challenge. That's that's the The night Roman coke guy night drink at the summer. Okay. It's a little cherry coke

Ryan Alford22:36

With a crown of vanilla Thanks to watching Stranger Things Uh, but look Netflix is headed to this place where they're gonna have to be at supported, right? And so this is a great way for them to do it Especially they can get hits like treasure things so keep making some great shows Right, so you get the eyeballs on it if they can add it and after the fact and change that sponsor out And this is modern marketing folks like this is product placement has been around a long time So I don't want to say it's new, but like when consumers are Scanning through stuff and you put an ad in there and they're going faster They don't want to pay attention to it. They don't really market it too

This is how you can market and gain awareness without Being overbearing. This is kind of coming to consumers and it goes back to tiktok as well What we're saying about tiktok like you know don't make ads make tiktok's that's right And I think it's just it's if I was coke and I wouldn't be surprised I have a similar strategy With your influencers. I'm not going. Oh, this coke is so delicious. Right. They need to have like, you know Enjoy coke t-shirt on while they're doing something they would naturally do So you're getting that brand impression you're you're you're extending the awareness right factor Um, and so consciously you know wake up in the morning and you want a coke Yes, yes, yes, work for you finally today. I thought this was fun. Madelo and talkies

Christina Yasi23:51

Are daring consumers to keep their hands off the co-branded vending machine I'm curious how this is going to work. I know we do it was really weird It's called a pillow and talkies have teamed to create a limited edition temperate temperature controlled vending machine We can have it here. Maybe that'd be a way. We have a talkies vending machine and Madelo Maybe that'd be better than the clear we go. There we go. Could we actually charge for it? Hey Madelo would give the vending machine to one lucky. Okay, one lucky contestant could be us in its hands on a hot drop competition, which is being held at an iHeart Radio block party Presented by the brand in person events in this type of experiential marketing

Can be expected to pick up this summer as covid spurred restrictions and behavior changes continue To subside that also comes to us from marketing time. This is fun. I mean, it's good collaboration. Yeah You know, you got two You got them in a Mexican beer brand Madelo. Yeah, and talkies, which I think is also a Mexican Originally they may have been bought by someone. Yeah, now. I think you're right. I like talkies. They're so hot Oh my gosh, I eat like three of them and let them out for fun. We have the same junk food days I got to do some talking. Listen, I'll put them away. Yes Again a good collab and we kept it light. We kept it fun Short somewhat short here on a midsummer's night. Yes

Ryan Alford25:20

Um, there it is. Shake your reference. I'm here for that. I'm here for yes Here on the red case any parting news miss jossie. I would not suggest doing delta eight Avoid the delta eight. I want to see. I need something not the pictures of them I want pictures before it went completely. Oh I'm going to go with my crown vanilla and cherry coke zero. That's a collab that's made in heaven and I think I'm here for it. They could be sponsors of the show. There you go. I'll work on it. The official cocktail of the red Can we be drinking it next week, please? You know, we'll find us the radcast.com search for all the content search for Jerry Coke zero or Stranger Things or National Kitten Day. There you go. Which is Sunday. So don't forget
